Microsoft Software

Microsoft software is available on both Windows and Mac platforms but has some restrictions. This page is designed to help direct you to the right place:

  • Windows

1. Operating systems and MS Office (university-owned machines)- All university-owned machines are eligible for MS Windows 7, Server 2012, Server 2008 and Office Professional Plus 2010. In general, the CS support staff will configure the setup for all university machines. One important thing to note: the computer needs to connect to the BU network every 100 days to re-authenticate with the license server (connecting to the campus VPN will suffice). In situations where university owned machines will be traveling offsite for a prolonged period, IS&T grants unrestricted licenses on a case-by-case basis. Please get in touch with the support team if you have any questions about this.

2. MS Office (personal machines, student machines)- Licenses for personal machines are available through IS&T at a discounted rate. Please visit the IS&T Help Center or visit this page for more details: http://www.bu.edu/tech/support/desktop/distribution/microsoft/

3. Microsoft software via the DreamSpark program (student, faculty, staff): All members of the CS Department may access a variety of Microsoft software through a Microsoft partnership collectively known as DreamSpark (formerly MSDNAA). As per the licensing agreement, only those with active CS accounts may request accounts and all software is intended for academic use only. In order to request an account, you can visit this site: DreamSparkAccountRequest

  • Macintosh
1. MS Office (university-owned machines)- As with the Windows platform, university-owned machines are eligible for MS Office for Mac (current version 2011).
